Did you know that
Mayor Mikel Virdell wanted a 5 year, $250,000 dredging contract?
Even months before the second Chanas Aggregates
contract was started, Mayor Mikel Virdell requested council approve a 5
year, $250,000 contract for dredging the LlanoTown Lake. There was no
reason for the extended contract at this time and several citizens spoke
to say so. One citizen requested that the mess from the previous
dredging project be cleaned up. We also still don't have a report of the
outcome of the first contract.
City Manager Brenton Lewis said that the benefits to
Llano of the long contract are:
-
A reduced price for a long contract. This doesn't
seem to be the case for all three contracts have a $2.50 per ton
cost. Brenton also had said that the second contract would be less
because the material was valuable to Chanas but the base contract
price was still $2.50. There was a discount if the river was drained
and access was given by Badu Park.
-
Better equipment could be purchased. The contract
didn't specify any different equipment or approach to dredging. When
asked, Brenton Lewis didn't know what the different equipment was or
did.
The 5 year contract was not approved. Citizens win
this time but keep an eye for this one returning.
