Did you know that Lame Duck Mayor Mikel Virdell's spending is not so lame?

Llano lame duck Mayor Mikel Virdell is squeezing in as much long term commitment as he can. The list below contains some of the actions he has taken so far to solidify his agenda past the next election. We say some because Mayor Virdell and City Manager Lewis are very secretive as the referenced articles show.

  • Riley Mountain - Mayor Virdell just signed a secret, 50 year lease for rights to one well on Riley Mountain which will cost at least $930,000.  If water is drawn from the well, a per gallon charge is assessed. The cost of drilling (at least $1,000,000), pumps, equipment, and delivery piping are extra. See article here.

  • City Manager Brenton Lewis contract extension - Brenton Lewis' contract was secretly extended to 4.5 years with at least 3 years severance. This will cost more than $400,000. See article here.

  • Dredging - Mayor Virdell tried to get council to approve a premature, 5 year dredging contract for $250,000. Citizens spoke against it and it didn't pass. See article here.

  • Police Station - Mayor Virdell negotiated the purchase of a "new" police station for $250,000 over 7 years. The Hutto building purchased will need extensive renovation, not included, before citizens can be proud of the building.  Citizens didn't find out until after the property closed. See article here.

  • Comprehensive Plan - The Comprehensive Plan is a statute-required activity to be done prior to any changes to the zoning ordinance. It describes community goals for the next 10-15 years. Mayor Virdell tried to hide that a grant application was actually for a Comprehensive Plan so as to avoid citizen input and assure specification of the mayor's objectives.. See articles here and here.

  • Zoning Ordinance OverhaulMayor Virdell is pushing forward with a "complete overhaul" of the Zoning Ordinance with an emphasis on "Best Use". He seems to feel that it is the City's responsibility to decide how your property is best used. See articles here, here, here, here, and here.

  • Increase Debt - Mayor Virdell has increased debt by $3,850,000. That’s $2,850 of debt for each of Llano’s 1,350 households. See article here.
